For most independent travelers, the Casablanca to Rabat train is the easiest, most affordable way to travel between the two cities. It avoids Casablanca’s motorway traffic, connects useful central stations, and usually takes around 1 hour to 1 hour 20 minutes on regular services.
A private driver or rental car is the better choice for families, groups, travelers with substantial luggage, or anyone who wants a door-to-door journey with the option to stop along the coast. By road, Casablanca to Rabat is approximately 95 km via the A1 toll motorway and normally takes around 1 hour to 1 hour 20 minutes, depending on traffic and your exact pickup and drop-off points.

Is the train or car better from Casablanca to Rabat?
My personal recommendation is simple:
- Take the regular ONCF train if you are travelling solo or as a couple and want a straightforward, good-value city-centre journey.
- Choose a private transfer or rental car if you have children, heavy luggage, limited time, or would like to stop in Mohammedia, Bouznika, Skhirat, or Temara on the way.
- Use Al Boraq when its departure and arrival stations suit your plans, especially if you are travelling between Casa Voyageurs and Rabat Agdal.
- Avoid relying on a shared grand taxi unless you are already comfortable with Moroccan shared transport. It can be practical for locals, but the train is usually easier for visitors.
Rabat is close enough for a comfortable day trip from Casablanca. However, one or two nights in Rabat gives you time to explore the city without watching the clock. Once you arrive, my Rabat city tour guide outlines realistic three-hour, half-day and full-day sightseeing routes.
Casablanca to Rabat by train: the best option for most travelers
The regular ONCF intercity train is generally the best Casablanca–Rabat transport option for independent visitors. Trains are frequent through much of the day, avoid road congestion, and bring you close to central Rabat.
Regular services such as Casa Port to Rabat Ville generally take around 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes. Journey times vary by train and departure/arrival station, so check the ONCF timetable.
You can check current departures and book where available through the ONCF website.

Which Casablanca station should you use?
Casablanca has more than one useful railway station, and choosing the wrong one is one of the most common mistakes on this route.
Casa Voyageurs: best for most travelers
Casa Voyageurs is Casablanca’s main railway hub for longer-distance journeys, including services towards Rabat, Tangier, Fes, and Marrakech. It is the most practical departure point for many travelers, particularly those using regular intercity trains or Al Boraq.
If you are staying away from the central waterfront area, Casa Voyageurs is usually the station to target.
Casa Port: useful from downtown Casablanca
Casa Port can be convenient if you are staying near central Casablanca, the old Medina, or the seafront business district. Some trains towards Rabat stop here, but always check the station printed on your ticket rather than assuming every service departs from Casa Port.
Before leaving your hotel, confirm both:
- Your exact departure station in Casablanca.
- Your arrival station in Rabat.
This small check can save a rushed taxi journey across Casablanca.
See my Morocco train map for other rail connections and station information.
Rabat Ville or Rabat Agdal: which arrival station is best?
For visitors, the two most important Rabat stations are Rabat Ville and Rabat Agdal.
Rabat Ville for sightseeing and central hotels
I recommend Rabat Ville for most first-time visitors and day-trippers. It is generally the most convenient station for reaching the city centre, the Medina, central hotels, and major sights.
From Rabat Ville, you can use a petit taxi or walk depending on your destination. If you take a petit taxi, use the meter where applicable and keep small Moroccan dirham notes and coins available.
Rabat Agdal for the modern district and Al Boraq
Rabat Agdal serves the modern Agdal district and is the station associated with Al Boraq high-speed services. It can be a good choice if your accommodation or meeting point is in Agdal, but it is less convenient than Rabat Ville for a classic Medina-and-monuments day trip.
Do not confuse Rabat Agdal with Rabat Ville when booking or boarding. They are different stations, and arriving at the less convenient one can add unnecessary time to your day.
Regular train or first class?
Standard Casablanca–Rabat TNR fares are often around 45 MAD in second class or 70 MAD in first class. For your exact fare, confirm the service and travel date using ONCF; Al Boraq may have different pricing.
When available, I recommend first class for visitors who value a quieter carriage, more comfortable seating, and easier luggage management. The extra cost can be worthwhile, especially during busy travel periods.
Second class remains a sensible option for budget-conscious travelers, particularly for such a short journey.
Al Boraq between Casablanca and Rabat
Al Boraq is Morocco’s high-speed rail service. It connects Casa Voyageurs with Rabat Agdal in approximately 50–55 minutes.
It can be the fastest rail option if those stations suit your itinerary. However, it is not automatically the best choice for every traveler. If you are staying near Casa Port or want to arrive at Rabat Ville for sightseeing, a regular train may be more practical overall once station transfers are considered.
Advance reservations are especially useful during summer, holiday weekends, and busy Al Boraq departures.
Keep your train ticket until you leave the station
Do not discard your ticket as soon as you board. Keep it until you have left the arrival station, as it may be checked during or after the journey.
This is an easy detail to overlook, particularly when you are carrying luggage or trying to organize a taxi on arrival.
Driving from Casablanca to Rabat: distance, motorway, and traffic
The Casablanca to Rabat distance is approximately 95 km by the A1 toll motorway. In normal conditions, I find the drive takes around 1 hour to 1 hour 20 minutes, depending on traffic and your exact pickup and drop-off locations.
I recommend the A1 motorway because it is well maintained, clearly signposted, and comfortable for driving.
The official motorway tariff for the Casablanca–Rabat section is currently 25 MAD for class 1, 36 MAD for class 2 and 43 MAD for class 3. The charge varies by vehicle class and entry/exit point.

When should you leave Casablanca?
Traffic is the main factor that can change an otherwise simple road journey.
Casablanca traffic can be particularly heavy during weekday morning rush hour. When possible, I recommend leaving:
- Before 7:30 AM, or
- After 9:30 AM
The return journey can also be slow when leaving Rabat between approximately 4:30 PM and 7:00 PM. If you are visiting Rabat for the day by car, either leave Rabat before that period or plan a relaxed early-evening meal before driving back.
Rabat generally feels calmer and easier to navigate by car than Casablanca, but central sightseeing is still easier on foot once you have parked.
Where to park in Rabat
If you are driving independently, use designated parking near the Medina, Hassan Tower, or the Bouregreg waterfront, then explore the central sights on foot.
Avoid repeatedly moving the car between nearby attractions. This wastes time and can make the day more stressful than necessary.
I also recommend choosing official or supervised parking rather than leaving a vehicle in unfamiliar narrow streets. Keep some small cash available for parking fees, and do not attempt to drive into tight Medina lanes.
Private transfer from Casablanca to Rabat
A private transfer is the most comfortable option for families, small groups, travelers with large suitcases, and visitors who want a flexible itinerary.
Depending on the service, a private vehicle may include:
- Air-conditioned transport
- A professional driver
- Flexible departure time
- Pickup and drop-off at your accommodation
- Space for luggage
- Optional coastal or sightseeing stops
Through Morkosh Tours, I can help arrange professional private transportation tailored to your itinerary.
- Compare private transfer options. I can also arrange private transport directly through Morkosh Tours.
A private transfer price depends on vehicle type, group size, pickup point, waiting time, luggage and optional stops. I recommend getting a fixed total quotation per vehicle and checking whether tolls, parking and any licensed sightseeing guide are included.

Coastal stops between Casablanca and Rabat
The road journey becomes more interesting when you have time to stop. Travelers with a private driver or rental car can consider Mohammedia, Bouznika, Skhirat, or Temara for beaches, coastal views, cafés, or seafood.
Bouznika is a particularly pleasant coastal stop between Casablanca and Rabat.
That said, do not try to fit every stop into a Rabat day trip. If Rabat is your main goal, choose one stop at most. Too many roadside breaks can leave you with little time for the city itself.
Casablanca to Rabat by taxi or shared grand taxi
A private taxi between the cities is possible, but for most visitors it is better to prearrange a professional transfer with a clear pickup point, vehicle type, price, and luggage arrangement.
Shared grand taxis are another possibility, but I usually recommend the train instead. Shared taxis can be less straightforward for tourists, especially if you have luggage, prefer a fixed schedule, or do not want to negotiate transport arrangements.
For travel within Rabat after arriving by train, petit taxis are generally inexpensive. Use the meter where applicable, agree on terms before accepting any service that is not metered, and carry small notes and coins.
Avoid accepting unsolicited guiding services without agreeing on the terms and price first.
Is the bus from Casablanca to Rabat worth considering?
CTM and other intercity buses can connect Casablanca and Rabat. Bus journeys may take approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic and the terminals used.
For this particular route, I generally recommend the train instead. The rail journey is usually more convenient for city-centre travel, avoids motorway traffic, and makes sense for visitors staying near Casa Voyageurs, Casa Port, Rabat Ville, or Rabat Agdal.
A bus can still suit you if its terminal is close to your accommodation or if train schedules do not fit your plans, but it is usually not my first choice.
Casablanca Airport to Rabat: train or private transfer?
Travelers landing at Casablanca Mohammed V Airport can continue to Rabat by train or private road transfer.
For airport rail connections, taxis and pickup logistics, read my Casablanca airport transfer guide.
Taking the train from Casablanca Airport to Rabat
For rail travel, follow the signs to the airport railway station beneath Terminal 1. Take the ONCF airport train to Casa Voyageurs, then change for a train towards Rabat Ville, Rabat Agdal, or another suitable Rabat station.
Allow approximately two hours or more for the full journey, including the connection. The exact total depends on the airport train timing, waiting time at Casa Voyageurs, and your final station in Rabat.
This is a practical and economical route for travelers with manageable luggage and no need for door-to-door service.
Private airport transfer to Rabat
A direct private transfer from Casablanca Airport to Rabat may take around 75 minutes in favorable conditions, though you should allow extra time for airport pickup procedures, traffic, and your exact destination in Rabat.
Ask for an all-in price per vehicle that specifies pickup, luggage allowance, airport waiting time, tolls and the exact Rabat drop-off point.
For families, late arrivals, travelers carrying bulky luggage, or anyone who wants to reach a Rabat hotel without changing trains, a prearranged transfer is often the simpler option.
Can you visit Rabat from Casablanca as a day trip?
Yes. Rabat is an excellent day trip from Casablanca because the journey is short and the central sights can be visited without a complicated itinerary.
For a train day trip, I recommend leaving Casablanca in the morning, ideally around 8:30 AM to 10:00 AM when convenient, then returning before late evening.
A practical first visit can include:
- Hassan Tower and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V
- The Kasbah of the Udayas and Andalusian Gardens
- Rabat Medina
- Chellah archaeological site
- The Bouregreg Marina and waterfront
The Kasbah of the Udayas is particularly worthwhile for its Atlantic and river views. Hassan Tower and the Mausoleum are essential stops for travelers interested in Moroccan history, while Chellah is especially interesting for its Roman and medieval heritage.
- Compare guided Rabat day trips.
- Confirm whether a licensed guide and entrance tickets are included.
For a relaxed break, enjoy Moroccan mint tea at a local café or restaurant such as Dar Naji, then walk around the Bouregreg waterfront.

My recommended way to travel from Casablanca to Rabat
If you are travelling independently, take the regular ONCF train and aim for Rabat Ville if your priority is the Medina and the main historic sights. It is affordable, simple, and well suited to a day trip.
Choose Al Boraq when the Casa Voyageurs–Rabat Agdal route fits your accommodation and schedule.
For families, groups, airport arrivals, travelers with substantial luggage, or anyone wanting to combine Rabat with a coastal stop, a private driver is often worth the extra cost. It removes station changes, allows a flexible departure, and can make better use of a limited travel day.
