Why Many Travelers Choose a Local SIM or eSIM in Morocco

Avoid the Roaming Trap

International roaming costs vary considerably depending on your home carrier and plan. Some travelers pay a daily roaming fee, while others already have international data or texting included.

Before leaving home, check exactly what your carrier charges for Morocco. If your plan has expensive daily or pay-as-you-go roaming charges, a Moroccan SIM or travel eSIM can be much better value, especially for a multi-day trip. If Morocco roaming is already included in your plan, using your existing SIM may be the simplest option.

Real‑World Connectivity: Wi‑Fi vs Mobile Data

• Public Wi‑Fi in medinas: often slow, unstable and open (no password).
• Riads and guesthouses: better, but can be overloaded in the evenings.
• Rural areas & Sahara: hotel Wi‑Fi is often weak; mobile data is usually faster where there is coverage.

You’ll want reliable data for:

• Navigation (Google Maps)
• Ride‑hailing (Careem, Heetch in some cities)
• WhatsApp with your driver/guide, riad, or tour operator
• Checking updates, tickets, emergency info

For many travelers, a local Moroccan SIM or travel eSIM is a convenient way to stay connected, especially if their home carrier charges high roaming fees.

Maroc Telecom vs INWI vs Orange (2026): Which to Choose?

Here’s the simplified comparison:

Maroc Telecom (IAM)

• Best for: Sahara, Atlas Mountains, rural roads and travelers who expect to spend time outside Morocco’s main cities.
• Coverage :
  • Strong coverage across Moroccan cities, towns and many main travel routes.
  • From my experience guiding across Morocco, Maroc Telecom is usually my first choice for trips that include the Sahara, Atlas Mountains and more remote areas.
  • Coverage can still disappear in isolated mountain valleys, desert areas and stretches far from towns.
• Getting started: Buy a registered Maroc Telecom Jawal prepaid SIM from an official kiosk, store or authorized reseller, then choose the current data recharge that suits your trip.
• Prepaid data: Maroc Telecom offers Jawal prepaid recharges and data passes. The available data allowances, prices and promotional bonuses can change, so check the current Jawal options when you buy or recharge your SIM.
• App: Mon Espace MT

Best use case:
Sahara, Atlas, rural roads and villages.

INWI

• Best for: Heavy data users, digital nomads, long stays
• Coverage:
  • Very dense in cities, strong in many towns and along highways
• Prepaid data:
  • INWI offers prepaid internet recharges in several sizes, and promotional data bonuses can change throughout the year.

Orange Morocco

• Best for: City travelers, social media, short trips
• Coverage:
  • Excellent in cities and along main routes
• Marhaba tourist offer:
  • ~15 GB for 100 MAD
  • Often includes free WhatsApp/Instagram/Facebook for 30 days
  • Current Marhaba offers start from 120 MAD.
  • Packages and included benefits vary, so check the current offer when buying or recharging.
• App: Max it by Orange Morocco.

Best use case:
Short city‑focused trips (Marrakech, Casablanca, Rabat, Fes, Tangier, Agadir, Essaouira).

Prefer an eSIM Instead?

If your main priority is landing in Morocco with mobile data already working, an eSIM may be more convenient than buying a physical SIM.

For most travelers, the decision is simple: choose an eSIM for convenience and a local Moroccan SIM when you want better value, a Moroccan number or stronger options for longer and more remote trips.

INWI Unlimited Prepaid Internet: A Useful Option for Heavy Data Users

If you expect to use a lot of mobile data in Morocco, INWI currently offers prepaid recharge options with unlimited internet. These can be useful for travelers who stream, work online, use their phone as a hotspot or simply do not want to keep watching their remaining gigabytes.

At the time of writing, INWI lists the following prepaid options:

• 100 MAD: Unlimited internet for 7 days + 10 minutes of national calls.
• 200 MAD: Unlimited internet for 14 days + 10 minutes of national calls.
• 300 MAD: Unlimited internet for 14 days + 9 hours of national and Zone 1 international calls + 100 SMS.
• 500 MAD: Unlimited internet for 30 days + unlimited national and Zone 1 international calls + 500 SMS.

These are prepaid offers, so they are much more relevant to travelers than committing to a long-term monthly mobile plan.

My advice: If you are staying for a week or two and expect heavy data use, ask an INWI shop about the current unlimited prepaid recharge options when you buy your SIM. Offers can change, so confirm the price, validity period and any applicable usage conditions before paying.

INWI describes these packages as unlimited internet, but I would not promise a specific full-speed allowance or throttled speed unless INWI provides those details for the exact offer you are buying.

Buying a SIM Card at Marrakech (RAK) & Casablanca (CMN)

SIM at Marrakech Airport (RAK)

This is where I meet many guests.

• Location: Maroc Telecom, INWI and Orange kiosks are inside baggage claim, before customs.
• Hours: Effectively 24/7 — I’ve seen operators open at 03:00 and 23:30.
• Prices: Same as in the city — no real “airport tax” in 2026.
  • SIM packages, data allowances and promotions change, so check the current prepaid options at the operator kiosk when you arrive rather than relying on a fixed GB/price example.

Important:
Once you cross customs, you cannot go back to buy a SIM. If you forget, you must wait until Marrakech city, which is annoying at night.

Be Careful With Unofficial SIM Sellers

Avoid buying from unofficial street sellers outside the airport. For the simplest setup, use the official Maroc Telecom, Orange Morocco or INWI kiosks inside the airport, or an official operator store later in the city.

Before leaving the counter, make sure the SIM is registered, activated, and that mobile data is working on your phone.

SIM at Casablanca Airport (CMN)

Casablanca (CMN) is the main hub for long‑haul flights.

• Official kiosks for Maroc Telecom, INWI, Orange

If you want something simple for city travel:

• Orange is usually the easiest at CMN.
  If you’ll immediately head to rural/Atlas/Sahara:
• Start with Maroc Telecom.

Prices are essentially the same as in town. Don’t waste your first day chasing a “cheaper” SIM.

Mandatory Logistics: Passport, Phone Lock, Registration

Bring Your Passport or Valid ID

Moroccan mobile operators must identify the person registering a prepaid SIM. For most foreign visitors, the easiest identification document to use is your passport, so bring it with you when buying a SIM.

Moroccan residents may use other accepted official identification documents. Requirements can vary slightly by operator and sales point, so having your original passport with you is the safest option for tourists.

The agent will:

• Take your details
• Register the SIM in your name
• Show you your new Moroccan number

Important:
Wait until you receive at least one SMS (welcome or data confirmation) before leaving the counter.

Your Phone Must Be Unlocked

Before traveling, make sure your phone is carrier-unlocked. A Moroccan physical SIM or travel eSIM from another provider may not work on a phone that is still locked to your home carrier.

If you use an iPhone, go to Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock. If you see “No SIM restrictions,” your iPhone is unlocked.

If your phone is locked, contact your home carrier before your trip and ask whether it can be unlocked. It is better to check this before arriving in Morocco than discover the problem at the airport SIM counter.

Avoid Street Vendors & Unregistered SIMs

Buy your SIM from an official operator kiosk, branded store or authorized reseller and make sure the SIM is properly registered in your name.

Moroccan prepaid SIM customers must be identified, so be cautious if a seller does not ask for an accepted identification document or cannot clearly explain the registration process.

For travelers, the simplest options are usually:

• Official airport operator kiosks
• Maroc Telecom, Orange Morocco or INWI stores
• Authorized branded resellers

Before leaving, confirm that the SIM is activated, your data package is applied and you can connect to mobile data.

Coverage by Region: Sahara, Atlas, Cities & Trains

Sahara Desert (Merzouga, Erg Chebbi, Erg Chigaga)

Best SIM for Sahara: Maroc Telecom.

• From my experience guiding in southern Morocco, Maroc Telecom is usually my first choice around Merzouga, M’Hamid and along the main Sahara approach roads. The exception is Erg Chigaga itself, where I have found Orange Morocco (Médi Telecom) to be the better choice for mobile signal.
• Coverage in the desert can still vary by exact location, so travelers should not expect a reliable connection everywhere between towns and camps.
• Expect 4G/3G in villages, some 4G on approach roads
• Orange / INWI: Both can work well in larger desert towns, but I would not rely on either everywhere in remote Sahara areas. One important exception from my experience is Erg Chigaga itself, where Orange Morocco (Médi Telecom) has given me the better signal.

In the dunes:

• 20–30 minutes into the dunes by 4×4 or camel → often no network
• Many camps have zero signal – this is normal (enjoy the stars).

When I guide Sahara trips, I always carry a Maroc Telecom SIM/hotspot.

Atlas Mountains (High & Middle Atlas)

Places like Imlil, Ouirgane, Aït Ben Haddou, Azrou, Ifrane:

• Maroc Telecom: safest choice in remote villages and high passes.
• INWI: sometimes surprisingly strong in certain towns and valleys.
• Expect:
  • Good coverage around larger towns and main roads
  • Dead zones on winding roads, regardless of the operator.

Imperial Cities & Coast (Marrakech, Fes, Casablanca, Rabat, Tangier, Essaouira, Agadir)

In cities and on much of the coast:

• All three operators generally perform well
• 4G remains widely available, while commercial 5G is now live and continues to expand. Your actual 5G availability will depend on your operator, phone, plan and exact location.

For city‑only trips, prioritise:

• Data value
• Social media packs (e.g. Marhaba tourist offer).

Trains (Al Boraq) & Highways

• Al Boraq high-speed line (Tangier–Kenitra–Rabat–Casablanca):
  • Mobile data is generally usable along much of the route, but signal quality can vary during the journey.
  • Expect occasional interruptions, so download anything important before traveling if you need continuous access.
• Highways (Marrakech–Casablanca–Fes–Agadir):
  • From my experience traveling and guiding across Morocco, Maroc Telecom is usually my first choice for long intercity journeys and main road routes because I tend to get the most consistent overall coverage.
  • Orange can also work well on major routes, while coverage with any operator can still drop in isolated stretches, mountain areas and remote roads.

Maroc Telecom (IAM) Balance & Recharge

• Check balance: Dial #580# for a free balance check.
• App: Mon Espace MT.

INWI Balance & Recharge

• Check balance: Call 120, or check your balance and usage in the My inwi app.
• App: My inwi.
• Tip: INWI’s published USSD balance codes can vary between its support pages, so the app or 120 is the safest option for travelers.

Orange Morocco Balance & Recharge

• Check balance: Dial #554# or call 5554.
• App: Max it by Orange Morocco.

Real-World Recommendations by Travel Style

1. One‑Week City Break (Marrakech + Essaouira)

• Buy at Marrakech Airport (RAK).
• Best choice: Marhaba tourist offer:
  • Orange’s current Marhaba prepaid offers start from around 120 MAD.
  • Depending on the recharge selected, they can include mobile data, unlimited social-network usage and credit for national or international calls.
  • Offers and included data can change, so check the current Marhaba options at the Orange counter or in the Max it app when you buy.

Enough for maps, social media and uploads, with Wi‑Fi in riads and cafés.

2. Imperial Cities + Sahara Tour (10–14 Days)

Route: Casablanca – Rabat – Fes – Merzouga – Dades – Marrakech.

• Buy Maroc Telecom at CMN or RAK.
• Choose a Maroc Telecom Jawal data recharge that gives you enough data for your 10–14 day trip. Current allowances and promotions change, so check the available options when you buy or recharge your SIM.
• Best for Sahara + mountains coverage.

3. Digital Nomad / Slow Travel (1–3 Months)

For longer stays, I’d consider:

• INWI prepaid unlimited-internet recharges for heavy data use in cities or at your main base.
• Maroc Telecom as a backup SIM if you plan regular trips into the Atlas Mountains, Sahara or other remote areas.

INWI currently offers unlimited-internet recharges with different validity periods, including a 30-day option. Check the current package and any usage conditions when buying or recharging, since offers can change.

This two-SIM approach can be useful for remote workers who want generous data in cities while still having a second network available for trips outside their main base.

4. Super Light User (Messages & Maps Only)

If you mainly need WhatsApp, maps, occasional browsing and booking apps, you probably do not need a large data package.

Options:

• Choose a smaller Morocco eSIM plan if you want data working as soon as you arrive.
• Or buy a basic prepaid data package from Maroc Telecom, Orange Morocco or INWI after arrival.

Compare the current allowance, validity period and price when you buy, because prepaid and eSIM offers change regularly.
