Tangier Airport Transfer: Taxi, Private Transfer & City Transport

Tangier Airport transfer with a grand taxi waiting outside Ibn Battouta Airport arrivals terminal as travelers collect their luggage.

Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport (TNG) is only around 11–12 kilometres from central Tangier, the Medina, the beach promenade and Tangier Ville railway station. In normal traffic, the journey usually takes 15–25 minutes, although busy periods can push it beyond 30 minutes.

For most visitors, the best Tangier airport transfer depends on the price quoted at the official taxi desk: choose an authorised airport taxi for a direct trip, consider the airport bus when travelling alone on a budget, or pre-book a private vehicle if you have children, several suitcases or a late-night arrival. Compare the actual vehicle fare with the bus ticket price before deciding; do not assume that a taxi will cost only slightly more than two bus fares.

Unlike Casablanca Mohammed V Airport, Tangier Airport has no direct railway station. If you are continuing by train, you first need to reach Tangier Ville station by road.

Which Tangier Airport transfer is best for your trip?

Your best option depends mostly on the number of people travelling, luggage and where you are staying.

  • Solo travellers with light luggage: Compare the ALSA airport bus with an official taxi. The bus costs less, but the taxi may be worth the difference for a direct ride.
  • Couples: An official airport taxi is usually good value because the fare is per vehicle, not per passenger.
  • Families, older travellers and visitors with several suitcases: A pre-booked private transfer is usually the easier choice, especially if you need a child seat or a larger vehicle.
  • Groups of five or six people: Book a suitable minivan in advance. Do not assume a standard taxi will carry everyone and all luggage comfortably.
  • Travellers staying inside Tangier Medina: Arrange the closest vehicle-accessible drop-off point with your riad before arrival.
  • Travellers continuing to Rabat, Casablanca or Marrakech: Travel to Tangier Ville, then use ONCF rail services. Tangier is the northern starting point for Al Boraq high-speed trains to Rabat and Casablanca.
  • Visitors heading directly to Chefchaouen, Tetouan or Asilah: A direct private transfer can save time and avoid an unnecessary stop in central Tangier.

Tangier Airport taxi: the practical choice for most arrivals

Official airport grand taxis wait at the designated taxi rank outside the arrivals terminal. This is the service I recommend using rather than accepting unsolicited offers from drivers approaching passengers around the terminal.

Grand taxis at Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport provide direct transportation to Tangier city center, the Medina, Tangier Ville railway station and nearby destinations.

Airport taxis are generally straightforward, direct and reasonably priced for central Tangier. They are particularly practical when you are arriving after a flight, carrying luggage or travelling to a hotel that is not convenient for the airport bus.

What does a Tangier Airport taxi cost?

Airport taxi prices deserve an extra check because published and newer accounts do not agree. The national airport operator ONDA’s posted taxi tariff shows these fares per vehicle:

  • Tangier city: 100 MAD from 5:30 AM to 10:30 PM; 150 MAD from 10:30 PM to 5:30 AM.
  • Tangier Ville train station: 120 MAD by day; 180 MAD at night.
  • Asilah: 200 MAD by day; 300 MAD at night.
  • Tetouan: 350 MAD by day; 525 MAD at night.

However, a Tangier-based transfer operator’s 2026 account describes a destination-ticket system at the airport and quotes around 200 MAD by day and 250 MAD at night for central Tangier. That is a commercial operator’s account rather than a revised ONDA tariff. The differing figures have not been reconciled.

Local tip: use the official airport taxi desk or designated rank, confirm the fare to your precise hotel or nearest accessible Medina gate, and check the current fare board or printed ticket before boarding. Do not assume an older online price still applies if the current desk issues a different fare. These are vehicle fares, not per-passenger fares.

How to avoid overpaying at Tangier Airport

The main rule is simple: use the official taxi rank and check the airport fare board.

Some unofficial drivers may approach arriving passengers and quote 250–600 MAD or more for a journey that should cost considerably less through the official airport system. There is no reason to accept these offers when the designated rank is available.

I also recommend the following:

  1. Carry Moroccan dirhams in cash. Airport taxi drivers commonly expect payment in dirhams.
  2. Keep smaller banknotes where possible. Finding change for a large note can be difficult.
  3. Confirm your destination before setting off. This matters particularly for Medina accommodation, where drivers may need to use a nearby gate rather than the hotel entrance.
  4. Avoid unsolicited luggage help unless you agree a price first. Some unofficial porters may ask for excessive tips after carrying bags only a short distance.
  5. Do not expect a blue petit taxi at the airport rank. Tangier’s blue petit taxis are intended for local urban rides; airport pickups generally use grand taxis.

Pre-booked private transfers: easier for families, groups and late arrivals

A private Tangier airport transfer costs more than an official taxi, but it can remove several arrival-day concerns: finding the right vehicle, handling luggage, communicating your Medina drop-off point and arranging a child seat or larger vehicle.

A pre-booked private transfer at Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport offers families and groups a more comfortable arrival, with direct pickup and extra luggage space.

Pre-booked private transfers to central Tangier are often advertised around 200–400 MAD per vehicle, but this is a shopping comparison range, not a guaranteed price or a confirmed Morkosh Tours quote. Compare the total cost including waiting time, late arrival charges, meeting point and vehicle size.

For families, groups and travellers arriving late at night, I recommend considering a pre-booked private vehicle rather than relying on arrangements made after landing.

What should a private transfer include?

Do not assume that every service includes the same things. Before booking, ask for written confirmation of:

  • A private, air-conditioned vehicle
  • The number of passengers and luggage capacity
  • Airport meet-and-greet and whether the driver will hold a name sign
  • Luggage assistance
  • Flight monitoring
  • Waiting time if your flight is delayed
  • A child safety seat, if needed
  • Direct transfer to your hotel or the nearest accessible Medina gate
  • Any extra charge for late-night arrivals or waiting time

Flight monitoring and extra waiting time are not automatically free, even when a company advertises airport pickup.

Through Morkosh Tours private driver services, travellers can discuss transportation according to their destination, group size, luggage and preferred vehicle. This is especially useful if you need more than a standard airport-to-hotel ride.

Tangier Airport bus: the lowest-cost option for light travellers

Budget-conscious visitors can consider the airport shuttle bus from Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport toward Tangier Ville railway station. Travel information commonly describes a fare of around 40 MAD per passenger, a journey of roughly 30–40 minutes and departures approximately once an hour. The stop is outside arrivals near the taxi area.

The Tangier Airport shuttle bus offers a budget-friendly transport option for travelers heading toward Tangier Ville railway station and the city center.

Older guides call it the ALSA AE/Aerobus line, but the city bus operator reportedly changed in late 2025. I have not independently confirmed whether its route number, operating company, timetable or last departure remain unchanged. Check the sign at the stop or ask the airport information desk. Do not plan a tight train connection around an unverified hourly departure.

Is the airport bus worth taking?

Yes, especially for solo travellers with light luggage heading toward Tangier Ville station. Two 40 MAD tickets cost 80 MAD, while a taxi may cost substantially more under the reported 2026 airport-ticket system. A direct taxi or pre-booked transfer is nevertheless easier for families, heavy luggage, late arrivals and accommodation away from the station.

Can you use Uber or ride-hailing apps at Tangier Airport?

Ride-hailing availability in Tangier can change, and airport pickup arrangements can be less reliable than city pickups. The supplied information mentions inDrive, Careem and Roby as possible services in Tangier, while Uber availability is described as limited or unavailable.

Even when an app works within the city, airport pickup can involve confusion over where the driver can stop, whether the booking will be accepted and how long you may wait. For a first arrival in Tangier, I would not rely on a ride-hailing app as your only airport plan. The official taxi rank or a confirmed private transfer is more dependable.

Getting from Tangier Airport to the Medina

Tangier Airport to the Medina normally takes around 15–25 minutes by taxi or private transfer in regular traffic. The important complication is not the road journey; it is the final few minutes on foot.

Many traditional riads and guesthouses in the historic Medina are inside narrow pedestrian streets. Taxis and private vehicles cannot reach every door. Depending on your accommodation, the driver may drop you near:

  • Grand Socco
  • Bab Raha
  • Another accessible Medina entrance agreed with your riad

Before flying, contact your accommodation and ask for clear arrival instructions. Request the nearest vehicle drop-off point, especially if you are arriving after dark or carrying heavy luggage. If needed, ask whether hotel staff can meet you and help carry bags through the Medina lanes.

This is one of the most common arrival mistakes: travellers book a beautiful riad, then assume their taxi can stop outside it. In many parts of the old city, that simply is not possible.

For help deciding where to stay and what to expect from the city, read the Tangier travel guide.

Tangier Airport to Tangier Ville station for trains

There is no train station at Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport. If you are travelling onward by rail, take an official taxi, a private transfer or the airport bus to Tangier Ville railway station.

Tangier Ville is the key rail connection for onward travel to Rabat, Casablanca and other Moroccan cities. Al Boraq high-speed trains connect Tangier with Rabat and Casablanca, with onward connections to Marrakech. For the network and station choices, see my Morocco train map.

For many independent travellers, reaching Tangier Ville and continuing by train is more economical than booking a private vehicle for a long-distance journey. I recommend reserving popular intercity trains ahead of time during summer holidays and other busy travel periods.

Allow enough time after landing. Passport control, baggage collection and exiting the terminal can take approximately 30–60 minutes, although the real wait depends on flight arrivals, immigration queues and airport conditions.

Direct transfers from Tangier Airport to nearby destinations

A direct road transfer can be useful when Tangier is only your arrival point rather than your destination. It is particularly practical for travellers heading to northern Morocco with children, heavy luggage or limited time.

Tangier Airport to Asilah

Asilah is approximately 30–45 minutes from the airport by road. Supplied local estimates place airport taxi fares at around:

  • 200 MAD during the day
  • 300 MAD at night

For a short coastal break, a direct transfer avoids travelling into Tangier only to leave again. If you are spending time in the city first, my Tangier to Asilah guide explains the train, taxi and road alternatives.

Tangier Airport to Tetouan

Tetouan is around one hour away by road. Indicative airport taxi fares in the supplied notes are:

  • 350 MAD by day
  • 525 MAD at night

A private vehicle is usually the more comfortable option for groups or travellers with substantial luggage.

Tangier Airport to Chefchaouen

Chefchaouen is roughly two to two and a half hours away through the Rif Mountains. Private transport estimates are around 1,200 MAD per vehicle.

The journey is scenic but long enough that vehicle comfort and luggage space matter. If you are travelling as a group, agree on a suitable vehicle in advance and allow time for mountain-road conditions. For onward options after staying in Tangier, see my Tangier to Chefchaouen transport guide.

Tangier Airport to Fes

A direct transfer to Fes is possible, but it is a long road journey of approximately four hours or more, depending on the route, traffic and stops. This option is best for travellers who value a door-to-door journey, need flexibility, or plan to incorporate sightseeing along the way.

Some travellers consider stops around Meknes or Volubilis, but these add driving time and need proper planning. For many independent visitors, train travel from Tangier Ville is the more economical alternative.

Should you rent a car at Tangier Airport?

A rental car can be useful if Tangier is the start of a wider northern Morocco itinerary. It gives flexibility for destinations such as Asilah, Tetouan, Chefchaouen and the Rif Mountains.

Indicative rental prices are around 250–500 MAD per day, depending on the vehicle and season.

I do not recommend renting a car solely for a short stay in Tangier Medina. Its streets are largely pedestrian and parking can be awkward. For an extended northern Morocco road trip, check rental deposits and insurance exclusions in my rent a car in Morocco guide.

If you are planning sightseeing beyond the city, this overview of tours in Tangier may help you compare guided and private transport options.

Money, ATMs and practical arrival advice

Tangier Airport has ATM and currency exchange facilities according to the supplied information, so you should be able to obtain Moroccan dirhams for your first taxi ride and smaller expenses.

I recommend withdrawing or exchanging enough for transport before leaving the terminal, then keeping smaller banknotes available. Taxi drivers, bus services and small local businesses may not always have change for large notes.

For late-night arrivals, use either:

  • The official airport taxi rank, after checking the displayed fare, or
  • A pre-booked private transfer with confirmed pickup details

Late arrivals are not the time to negotiate with uninvited drivers or to depend on an app that may not accept an airport pickup.

The most common Tangier Airport transfer mistakes

The arrival process is easy once you know what to expect. The mistakes I see most often are avoidable:

  • Not checking the official airport taxi fare before boarding
  • Accepting a ride from an unidentified driver outside the formal taxi system
  • Forgetting to carry Moroccan dirhams
  • Overlooking the airport bus when travelling alone with light luggage
  • Assuming a standard taxi can carry a large group and oversized bags
  • Booking Medina accommodation without asking where the vehicle can stop
  • Failing to arrange luggage help through the Medina if it is needed
  • Treating flight monitoring or waiting time as automatically included in a private transfer
  • Expecting Tangier Airport to have a railway station

Choose your Tangier Airport transfer before you land

Tangier Airport is close enough to the city that transfers are usually uncomplicated. For most couples, the official grand taxi is the sensible balance of price and convenience. Solo travellers should compare the airport bus with the taxi fare, while families and groups with luggage will usually have an easier arrival with a properly booked private vehicle.

The key is to plan the final drop-off point if you are staying in the Medina, carry some dirhams, and avoid unofficial transport offers. Once you reach Tangier Ville, the city also becomes a convenient starting point for rail travel south toward Rabat and Casablanca.

FAQ

How much is a taxi from Tangier Airport to the city centre?

ONDA’s publicly posted table lists 100 MAD to Tangier city and 120 MAD to the train station by day. However, a Tangier operator describes a newer airport ticket system charging around 200 MAD for central Tangier. Confirm the rate at the official airport taxi desk or ticket machine before boarding; night fares are higher.

How far is Tangier Airport from the Medina?

Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport is approximately 11–12 kilometres from central Tangier and the Medina. The drive normally takes around 15–25 minutes, but may take 30 minutes or longer during busy traffic.

Is there a train station at Tangier Airport?

No. Tangier Airport does not have a direct railway station. Travellers continuing by train need to travel by taxi, private transfer or airport bus to Tangier Ville station.

Can a taxi take me directly to my riad in Tangier Medina?

Not always. Many Medina streets are pedestrian-only or too narrow for vehicles. Your driver may need to stop at Grand Socco, Bab Raha or another accessible entrance. Contact your riad before arrival for the correct drop-off point and luggage instructions.

Is the Tangier Airport bus cheaper than a taxi?

For one person with light luggage, the airport bus can be much cheaper at approximately 40 MAD. Two bus tickets cost around 80 MAD, which may still be significantly below the official taxi quote if the newer destination-ticket system is in use.
